Class Policies

A. Note from the Instructor

I will lead a respectful and disciplined classroom. To achieve this I have established a few simple policies. As a student, it is your responsibility to comply with these policies. If you decide not to comply, there will be logical consequences. By enforcing these policies, I promise to you fairness and order in our classroom.

B. Class Rules:

Be Ready to Work- See the Class Procedures for this step.  Failure to be ready when the bell rings results in an immediate lunch detention.

Make Quick and Smooth Transitions- Come into the room quietly.  Stay in your seats.  Do not walk around during class unless directed to do so. Get into your groups quietly.

Do Not Distract Others- Students will exhibit courtesy and respect toward all other students at all times.  Physical contact of any kind is not permitted.  Nothing will go airborne in class at any time. This includes pens, paper, and other students.

No Electronic Devices- This includes cell phones, Ipods, MP3 players, pagers, CD players, etc.  If I see or hear them I will take them up and give them to the office.

No Uninvited Talking- We will have plenty to discuss and talk about in class; however your date last night or who had a fight in the hall will not be part of it.  Hateful comments will not be tolerated, even “joking" comments.

I Need to See Your Eyes- Students may not sleep in class. To prevent this, students' eyes must be open and visible to the instructor at all times. No sunglasses, hats, or hoods worn on the head.

Keep the Room Neat- Backpacks hang on the back of the desk or go under the desk.  Anything other than backpacks, such as large athletic bags, will be placed inside the door when you come in the room.  The aisles must be clear at all times. Throw all trash away at the end of class.

Leave the Food at Home- Students may not have any food or drink in the classroom. This includes gum, candy, and open or unopened food and drink.

C. If YOU CHOOSE to Break a Class Rule:
Punishments will always fit the crime. Of course there are behaviors that will warrant a referral immediately. Examples of this include cursing, disrespect, insubordination, or violent behavior. Behaviors that are less severe will fall under the 3 W’s.

Wiggle – 1st incident.  I will make eye contact with the student and/or walk to their desk.  I may also give a verbal warning.

Wave – 2nd incident.  I will write the student’s name on the board.

Whack – 3rd incident.  I will assign a detention and call student’s parent/guardian.

Teacher detentions for my class will be served before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:30-7:55 AM.  Failure to attend a teacher detention will result in an office referral and further discipline.

D. Tardies
A student is tardy if they are not in their assigned seat when the bell rings.  The tardy penalty is explained in the Student Handbook.

E. Academic Honesty
It is expected that students will do their own work. Plagiarism is the use of facts, opinions and language, either all or in part, taken from another author without giving proper acknowledgement to the source.  This applies to both book and online sources.  Students found plagiarizing, copying, or cheating in any way will receive automatic zeros and have phone calls made to their parents. This includes talking or texting during a test or quiz.

F. Attendance
If a student is absent from class he/she is responsible for the assignments/homework that were missed. If you know you are going to be gone, see me ahead of time for your work.  It is up to the student to inquire about missed work and tests. After the two days that are allowed, the missed work will follow the No Zero Policy.    On the day you return from an absence check the Make-Up Work folder on the back table. The assignment sheet will likely answer any questions regarding "what we did" when you were gone. If there are any questions beyond the assignment sheet, speak with me before class begins, after class, or during conference period.

G.  Make up Tests
If you are absent for a test day (not the day before a test) you will have to arrange for a make-up test.  Make-up tests are done on Tuesdays or Thursdays 7:30-7:55 AM.  You must make an appointment.  A missed make-up test without notice will result in the No Zero Policy being followed.  Students who fail a major test may retest one time per class per six weeks.  The retest grade cannot be higher than a 70.
